HOUSE OF LABRYS is an immersive soundscape and sound performance, a spatial musical composition, developed by artist duo levaKrish (Krišjānis Sants & Ieva Gaurilčikaitė), in collaboration with Latvian composer Jēkabs Nīmanis. It is the gripping attempt to create an architectural space just by movement and sound – an experience both intensely sensual as well as mental.
HOUSE OF LABRYS is a quadrophonic dance that cannot be experienced visually: The audience will be asked to wear blindfolds upon entrance. Afterwards, they will be ushered to their seats, which will be configured according to a pattern. Four “sounding” dancers perform complex movement sequences among the geometrically arranged audience that will thus be engulfed by a spatial sound installation.
IevaKrish und Nīmanis, in collaboration with software and hardware designer Pāvils Jurjāns, invented a new mobile instrument for HOUSE OF LABRYS: A kinetic counterpoint sampler carried and operated by the dancers. The composition, consisting of 38 prerecorded sound samples, unfolds according to the rules and decisions of the choreographic material, manifested invisibly within the room.
Latvian Krišjānis Sants studied, among other things, dance at P.A.R.T.S. in Belgium; Lithuanian Ieva Gaurilčikaitė received her education in Scotland and Israel. Since 2016, the artist pair has been living and working in Riga, where both have received a degree in stage design at the Latvian Art Academy. Their practice at the crossroads of choreography and scenography creates immersive experiences. They work with a multitude of formats and media – from one-on-one performances to large-scale interactive events situated between dance, dining, collective massage, and breathing workshops.
HOUSE OF LABRYS has been conceived for (but is not limited to) visitors with visual impairments.
