Urban-Arts-Ensemble des Theaters Oberhausen
With a direct approach, confrontation with social conflicts and space for reflection and discussion, the production encourages us to question and challenge reality – on several levels.
(Excerpt from the jury statement)
How does it feel to be under constant observation? When supposed curiosity reinforces a perpetual feeling of otherness? When another person’s mind is already made up before any words have even been exchanged? SUITS depicts a hopeless attempt to become invisible in a majority-white society and uses dance to examine the everyday lives of people of colour in Germany. A yearning to belong is met with explicit, dismissive language—the interplay between these two poles makes these everyday confrontations with racism tangible for the audience and opens our eyes to the associated traumas, psychological stress and physical burdens that they induce.
Under the direction of Kwame Osei and Kama Frankl-Groß and with an ensemble of six dancers since the 2023/24 season, the urban arts have taken hold at Theater Oberhausen—marking the first time urban arts have been featured at a municipal theatre! With intrinsic ties to the theatre’s overall programme and in collaboration with independent urban arts performers, Theater Oberhausen has created a venue for innovative urban aesthetics. The new department aims to establish a deep and lasting connection with the diverse communities of Oberhausen’s urban society and open up a dialogue with the entire audience.
