The Triple Bill within the framework of the MOVING CONCRETE festival will shift the topical focus on the artistic practice of urban dance creatives working in Germany. With three performances, the evening will provide insight into the state of the art of urban choreographies as well as into the developmental potential of urban dance cultures within a stage context in Germany.

Signature Snippets by Jonas Frey

Signature Snippets is a dance piece about the quest for an individual style. To do this, both dancers, Jonas Frey and Joseph Simon, return to their roots in breaking. Every crew brings their own stylistic peculiarities, every dancer has his or her own style. Extraordinarily memorable movements are called “signature moves”. They mirror the individual dancer’s personality as well as the creativity of the broader scene. Signature Snippets is dedicated to those moves as well as to the recollection of special spaces, the shared sessions, and the friendships that developed out of them.

Opferschicht – Narben und Namen by the Kadir Memiş Company
Premiere of the Stage Version

Inspired by the “jazz style corner”-movement and the Berlin graffiti scene, choreographer Kadir “Amigo” Memiş has been working on the intersection of script and dance since 2005. In the Opferschicht dance performance, he explores the urban cultural practice of scratchiti – the carving of writing into urban in-between spaces – , joining it with certain popping techniques. In this, he and three more performers are searching for choreographic representation to realise the longings of writing as well as its physical processes. Produced as a film in the context of the pandemic, the Kadir Memiş Company will present a short stage version of the play during the MOVING CONCRETE festival.

INDIGO by Sophie Yukiko
Premiere of the Stage Version

Sophie Yukiko will show a stage adaptation of an excerpt from her short film project INDIGO, in which she deals with the actualities of black women with Afro-Caribbean origins living in the European diaspora. The questions of generation and memory to heal shared but also personal, non-wounded history are central aspects of the work. Driven by the desire to share, the communal experience should be perceived as a journey here, a journey that transforms trauma into wisdom. Queer people in ballroom culture find support in so-called “houses” that serve as adopted families. Three mother-daughter ballroom generations share the stage in INDIGO when Georgina Leo Saint Laurent, Sophie Yukiko and Aaliyah Thanisha Philipp come on.

Duration: 90 min. incl. intermission
