About Daniel Luka

„I am always fascinated by what you can do with two aluminium shod shoes“, says Daniel Luka.

Choreographer, dancer and teacher Daniel Luka, tanzhaus nrw’s most prominent figure of tap dance. He emphasises the use of the English term “tap dance”, which marks it as a contemporary art form.

For Daniel Luka, tap dance is not just a dance style, but a way of life. "Every step we take every day creates a sound and a rhythm without us being aware of it," Daniel notes, "Yet the sound is not created with the feet, but rather out of a body movement."

Daniel Luka started teaching in his hometown of Wuppertal when he was only fourteen, living and dancing in New York and Barcelona a few years later. Today, he is a versatile performer collaborating with top-class artists from the international dance and music scenes. All the while, he likes pushing boundaries, experimenting with hip hop music or electronic beats, looking for any entanglement with video or digital art and absorbing impulses by vastly different cultures.

Apart from regular classes, tanzhaus nrw has now been hosting the Tap Dance Days, that resonate with current streams, in workshops and performances within the house for four days. Tap Dance Days 2022, curated by Daniel Luka, will take place from 25 May to 29 May, celebrating a very special anniversary edition, as its kick-off this year falls on the US National Tap Dance Day - a special day for the tap community worldwide!
