Third Skin
The Third Skin performance by German-Spanish choreographer and artist Ana Lessing Menjibar is a poetic reaction to the opening of her family history, dedicated to the experiences in war and fascism, collective as well as individual wounds, and the experiences of political resistance across three generations. In resonance to this exploration, the artist and her team shape the fiction of a chimaera in constant metamorphosis between resistance and porosity. In Third Skin, Ana Lessing Menjibar takes up the (body) knowledge inherent in flamenco and recombines it within her specific, transdisciplinary method with elements from visual art, contemporary dance, and electronic music composition to design an energetic cosmos of body, sound, rhythm, language, and sculptural objects.
Ana Lessing Menjibar is a German-Spanish performer, dancer, choreographer, and multidisciplinary artist. She lives and works in Berlin. In her interdisciplinary practice, she interlaces bodies and sound composition into multimedia installations for which she creates electronic music, videos, and sculptural elements that are understood as enhanced choreographic practice for the construction of poetic worlds. Therein, she experiments with flamenco’s transformative potential in the context of performance and contemporary dance. At the core is the knowledge which is carried by traditional dances and rhythms and the question of its continuation to create forward-looking concepts of body and society.

“We created this work in response to the recurrent rise of right-wing movements in Spain, Germany, and elsewhere. We created this work because this political reality confronted us not only with society today, but also with our past. And I had many questions about my family’s experiences during and after the fascist system in Spain and Germany.”
