As a choreography for six dancers, 16 BIT sheds light on techno both as an art form and a social phenomenon. During a decades-long cultural exchange across the Atlantic, techno provided marginalised communities with a voice, paving the way for scientific experimentation, making the avantgardes soar. Techno stood as an Afrofuturistic expression for the Black Detroit community as well as for liberation and unification at the point in time the Berlin wall fell.

16 BIT picks up on these ideas and examines techno development from the undefined DIY landscape of electronic music during the 1980s to a genre of worldwide renown ushering in the early 90s. 16 BIT lends expression to the energy inherent in techno, making us feel the ecstasy, stamina, and exhaustion of a collective body on stage.

Paula Rosolen studied dance at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and graduated with a master’s degree in choreography from the Justus Liebig University Giessen. She created her own works at different theatre houses and at festivals as an author, choreographer, and director. In her choreographic pieces, she explores the overlap between dance, performance, music, and theatre.

A piece that, with absolutely no reliance on chemical enhancement, which was historically much loved by the techno public, succeeds to engulf the audience in a hypnotic trance
