“Stance” is a term originating in breaking culture, describing a position of personal opposition. Bahar Gökten and Daniela Rodriguez Romero, in conjunction with six urban dancers, start searching for their own resistant standing, in the context of the VOLUME UP festival. They collectively dive into creative processes, reflect their own stance, and look for their physical expressions. They are interested in the unheard, in subcultural correlations, in that which seldomly appears. [resi]stance | take a stance! is an artistic research within the [resi]stance series about dealing with embodied resistance by means of scenic research. The two artists developed it on the occasion of the Resist! Die Kunst des Widerstands (Resist! The Art of Resistance) exhibition, together with urban dancers, at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne. [resi]stance | take a stance! now locates this research at tanzhaus nrw for the first time, imparting it with an artistic-activist expression in four intervention performances.
Bahar Gökten and Daniela Rodriguez Romero are urban choreographers, dancers, and founding members of dance collective nutrospektif, which is currently a tanzhaus nrw Factory Artist. They lead a wide-ranging and profound debate with urban dance cultures in stage and urban spaces within their artistic and educational works. Urban dance cultures are practices with a resistant potential, both on the stages of international production houses as well as in urban space, and Bahar Gökten and Daniela Rodriguez Romero reflect, process, and expand upon this in their work.
