Turna/Kranich. Until the feet detach from the ground and the crane soars up to the sky

Together with a group made up of professional as well as non-professional dancers, choreographer Özlem Alkış explores the movement forms of the crane semah. Semah is a dance-like prayer, practiced as the culmination of the community-forming Cem ceremony in Alevism. During a research process of many months that has been part of a Residency in Reality at tanzhaus nrw since early summer of this year, the research group has been dedicated to the physical and musical encounters in this ritual of the publicly marginalized Alevi community. Özlem Alkış and her collaborators share multi-layered approaches to the cultural phenomenon of the crane semah as the outcome in Turna/Kranich. During this process, the tanzhaus nrw foyer will be transformed into a space of remembrance that unfolds as an experimental format between performance and talk on 2 October. The group will open their communal work process over the course of several workshops and talks, designed as accompanying measures, on 3 October. They are going to convey movement and musical forms of the Alevi diaspora in short lectures, in talks and practiced formats. Özlem Alkış was born to an Alevi family in Istanbul in Turkey. She lives and works in Cologne, and she shares a continuous working relationship with tanzhaus nrw. She already presented some of her works at the house, among them Camouflage (2016) and Reverbs (2018).
