Be.Girl
Five bodies float in space. Structures, creatures, shadows. The bodies move in patterns, with each other, like stars, planets, and moons: At times close together, at times at a distance from each other in a universe they keep defining for themselves. Every movement is precise, their energy powerful, electric, lithe. Valentine Nagata-Ramos shakes hip hop’s masculine imagery in Be.Girl, and she does it by putting the spotlight on a group of virtuosic dancers who are among the best French b-girls. Be.Girl plays with the sensitivity and subtlety of force inherent in the female body, thereby searching new ways of understanding and appreciating breaking. Based on the role of women in male-dominated breaking, the performance poses questions to the current situation of women, for a personal self-conception and their position in our societies.
The Uzumaki Company finds the artistic dimension within their plays in the mixture of genres and opposites, as well as in the amalgamation of tradition and recent developments. Valentine Nagata-Ramos was born in Japan, grew up in France, and has been working on the fringes of battles, performance, and choreography. Her choreographic research grows out of breaking, the urban dance culture in which she is rooted.

As an audience, we are mainly served apparently “complete” products on stage. But what is the process towards a specific expression? Who is behind the artists, and what motivates them? As members of the audience, we easily forget the intensive journey and the long research process that are connected to an audience. The Artist Talks aim to produce transparency, opening a shared dialogue with the artists behind the pieces. We would really like to invite you to share your personal impressions.
