Carcaça
The energy in Marco da Silva Ferreira’s new piece Carcaça is stunning, contagious, and it makes your heart rate rise. The choreography’s immense power circulates between the dancers right away, quickly spreading, encompassing the audience, transforming the hall into one seething, vibrating collective. We encounter dance as a cultural practice in Carcaça, moulding communities and forming collective identities. Humans have been dancing as long as they have existed. How does the idea of a community emerge between past events and the will to confidently shape the future? What shall be forgotten, what shall be rebuild? The precisely crafted choreography is characterised by the dancers’ legwork. They hop from one leg to the other in a rapid pace, gyrate, traversing the stage space. They come close to one another, smiling at each other, diverging again at the next moment, all the while citing and reworking multitudes of different movement cultures, from traditional folk dances to elements from urban dance cultures such as waacking and kuduro. Carcaça is constantly evolving and takes many unexpected and astonishing turns. Carcaça, meaning skeleton, simultaneously denotes the end and a new beginning, unleashing a determined movement towards the future of community and freedom.
Marco da Silva Ferreira lives and works in Portugal. He danced for Hofesh Shechter and, since his first play Brother, produced in 2016, he has been fostering a high-intensity style that challenges the dancers’ physical strength and stamina. He elevates this highly physical style onto a new level in Carcaça, exploring dance’s political and community-building capacities in a remarkable way.
