Carmen Muñoz stands as a discovery among the international flamenco scene. The artist just recently graduated from her studies at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, and she processes a vast knowledge about flamenco dance heritage in her pieces.

Her work Bailes de histéricas takes the audience on a journey to imagined meetings with dancers Fanny Elsler, Carmen Mora, Manuela Vargas, and La Chana. On stage, it is Muñoz’ own body that makes the historic dancers appear through its movements and the application of an embodiment technique. Accompanied by Jorge Mesa “El Pirata”, the young choreographer thus passes flamenco pioneers in review while simultaneously getting to the bottom of the problematic term of hysteria. She contrasts outdated and discriminating notions of femininity with a powerful and unique system of expression.

Carmen Muñoz graduated from the the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona in choreography and dance and started her career at the young company Nosolodanza de Córdoba. She dances in pieces by Juan Carlos Lérida, José Manuel Alvarez, Juan Carlos Avecilla, and others. Her own choreographic works have garnered international attention. Her piece Catalina Mia was awarded first prize for choreography at the choreography competition for Spanish flamenco dance in Madrid. Now she will guest at tanzhaus nrw for the first time, presenting Bailes de histéricas as part of the Flamenco Festival.
