Choreographer and media artist Choy Ka Fai – a former tanzhaus nrw Factory Artist – investigates Asian shamanic dance cultures and also revives alternative and partly vanished dance cultures, trance phenomena, and spiritual rituals. In his work, the artist combines digital media techniques as well as new technologies with dance in the physical space.

Choy Ka Fai currently prepares the establishment of the Lotus Tiger Society. As the global alliance of the Vietnamese diaspora community and their mother goddess-centred folk religion, the Lotus Tiger Society celebrates stories of migration and transcendence. The project is part of the Cosmic Wander series, out of which Choy Ka Fai showed several instalments at tanzhaus nrw. During this year’s TEMPS D’IMAGES, two research projects from the work in progress on the Lotus Tiger Society will be presented. Virtual reality film Songs from the Dark Forest will be shown as an installation in the foyer. Performance Uncle Ho who can recall your future lives will be presented on the small stage: The work is inspired by stories from the Vietnamese diaspora and revolutionary leader Hồ Chí Minh who went on a state visit to the GDR in 1957. The performance in which Choy Ka Fai collaborates with dancer Toan Le, who has a background in urban dance styles and artistry. Together, they present research in expectancy of the imminent spiritual-religious immortalisation of Uncle Ho, as he was affectionately known.
