One double evening will present two works by interdisciplinary Lebanese artist Rabih Mroué, works he created for the DANCE ON ENSEMBLE. DANCE ON is a project that provides a unique experience of a treasure trove of works and the artistic potential spanning more than 40 years. It was relaunched under Ty Boomershine’s direction in 2018.
In the “Elephant” piece, dancers Ty Boomershine, Jone San Martin and Marco Volta move in dialogue with geometrical patterns, probe for their fabrication and lose their way within them. During their rescue attempts, the desire for togetherness and the obstacles of loneliness, barely conquerable, become clearly tangible.
“You should have seen me dancing Waltz” contrasts dance’s potential ambiguity with the alleged clearness of newspaper headlines. How do reports on violence, catastrophes and political fights influence dancers’ bodies? Does a language of violence even extend so far as to change movement? Together with the dancers, Rabih Mroué negotiates this almost unseizable complex in a very personal manner.
Rabih Mroué succeeds, like only a few others do, to combine his aesthetic exploration with a political one: “You cannot escape politics in art. My works are of a political nature because they pose questions and share ideas with the audience, without resorting to propaganda.”
