Beyoncé’s “Countdown” made pop hearts skip a beat – and it made waves in the dance world. Because in her video, the grand mistress of musical movement borrowed generously from Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s choreography “Rosas danst Rosas”. Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker is the icon of contemporary dance: This triggered litigation as well as the innovative “Re:Rosas” project. The choreography was made freely available for re-dancing, restaging, on the only condition that a video of the reinterpretation should be sent back.
Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s Belgian company Rosas reintroduces the brilliant and provocative classic, interpreted by a younger generation of dancers, back to the stage, imbuing the original version’s choreography with new life. At the centre of this masterwork for four dancers: A quick pulse that drives exact everyday movements in virtuosic repetition and tender trying into aggressive falling – accompanied by Thierry de Mey’s and Peter Vermeersch’s furious musical compositions. With its meticulous timing, tireless synchronicity and varying repetition bordering on exhaustion, the creation remains as breathtaking as it was when it premiered in 1983, when Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker wrote dance history at the outset of her global career.
