In Japanese, the word “Hakanai” stands as a poetic form for uncertainty in the fugacity and erratic nature of existence. Combined from the characters describing humanand dream, the word unlocks a twilight zone of facts and possibilities. French artists Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne, well-known for their almost transcendental virtual performances, achieve an overwhelming form in their choreography for one dancer as well as live composition with pictures and sounds in a 360° projection. They create a world lingering between reality and fiction. Their graphic strictness and the poetic interaction of body and light are also widely inspired by the exact syllabic shapes of the haiku. The audience closely experiences a synaesthetic performance. Adrien Mondot, information scientist and juggler, and Claire Bardainne, sculptress and stage designer, are constantly on the lookout for means of expression veering between performance and installation, uniquely connecting the performing arts with the newest developments in digital technology. Since 2001, their joint work has focused on the human being as a complex creature, a creature which proposes a challenge to steadily redefine the boundaries in technological potential. They develop custom-made tools applicable to every situation and turn the digital realm into much, much more than just numerical code: Their imagery comes up as extremely versatile and alive, yet at the same time sensitive and fragile.
