Mounia Nassangar
A sophisticated production that is also suitable for our visitors aged 14 and above.
Mounia and her crew do not follow the beat; the beat follows them! They will bring a celebrated waacking performance to tanzhaus nrw with STUCK. Waacking is a dancing style that came up in the disco era of the 70s within the Afro-Latinx American LGBTQIA*+ community in Los Angeles. Queer people could be themselves in the disco clubs. There, waacking became an expressive dance to resist racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia and to fete exactly those qualities of one’s own identity that are even to this day regarded as “weak” and which remain depreciated: Vulnerability, emotionality, femininity. Waacking, that is: rotating arm movements, posing and an emphasis on expression, all in conjunction with disco music. STUCK tells the story how blockades turn into movement, how one “whack” opens space for agency. Five exceptional dancers dance on stage, fascinating through their musicality, body control and expressiveness. Language falters in STUCK – and dance takes over. The sound of STUCK resonates like an echo of the history of waacking: A dance style born from an act of resistance and self-love.
Mounia Nassangar is an international waacking icon. She works as a dancer, actor, model, DJ, and event producer, and she is also the artistic director of her own company. She has been dancing since she was five, within different styles such as popping, locking, new style, House Dance, Dancehall, and street jazz before specialising in waacking. In 2018, Mounia broke through to a broader audience due to Jean-Paul Gaultier’s touching Fashion Freak Show at Paris’ Folies Bergère as well as Gaspar Noé’s award-winning film, Climax. She choreographed the music video for Aya Nakamura’s 2022 SMS in 2022 in which she also features and took over movement directorial duties for the artist Kelela. She founded her own company cie.nassangar, with which she developed STUCK in 2024, back in 2023.
