Boys' Club
Boys' Club reflects on the experiences of female-read tap artists throughout history, up to the present day. The play deals with power dynamics that show the many facets in which female-read people are perceived in today's world. With their piece, the women-led Canadian tap dance company tells their individual stories and relates them to female artists who came before them. In the process, strong similarities between current and historical occurrences become clear – experiences that artists in male-centred societies have over time are similar.
Veronica Simpson, Elise McGrenera and Laura Donaldson were resident artists at the 2022 edition of the TAP AHEAD Festival and founded their company Boys' Club shortly afterwards. Their first joint piece of the same name premiered in Barcelona in 2023 and now the three dancers are returning to Düsseldorf.
In Boys' Club, all female does not only refer to dance and choreography: the soundtrack of the piece consists exclusively of tracks by female musicians and composers.
