Dancer and choreographer Tian Gao comes from the Chinese city of Wuhan; and she moved to Berlin in 2016. Before the outbreak of the pandemic, which might well have marked her hometown for all time, Wuhan was widely known as the city of rivers, for the Han river merges into the Yangtzekiang, the world’s third-longest river, within the city boundaries. Today, Tian Gao has become a member of Sahsa Waltz’s company, and with River, she presents a dance performance that carries Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s piece Narrow Sea at its heart: A work for four pianos, four drummers, and one female voice. Tian Gao’s solo performance reflects on the meaning of rivers, memories, and identities, with water as the origin of life, as a boundary, and as a place to yearn for.
