UNDERGROWTH. Untamed herbs, seedlings, saplings and ferns growing on the forest floor, beneath the large trees.

What allows for change to take root? What supports individuals to alter what holds old systems in place? How much do we need to strip away for new practices to emerge? UNDERGROWTH is a online series designed by dramaturge and dance artist Monica Gillette. Each month will focus on specific themes as ingredients for changemaking, in dialog with invited guest artists.

The fourth guest in the UNDERGROWTH series is performer and choreographer Mia Habib, who also holds an M.A. in conflict resolution and mediation. Her most recent creation, How to die – Inopiné is a transdisciplinary investigation into ecological grief, cultural panic and a feeling of collapse. In this session we will connect to the practices she has developed that extend from French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, who states that to evoke sustainable change, we must practice moving through the unexpected. To rearrange the order of things and let go of patterns, we need to actively engage with the displacement of our bodies and minds. The key topics for this session are displacement and alternative modes of being together in non-verbal action.
