A city in the night? Delayed trains clatter past. Supple movements of a body break through the darkness. A human being? An animal? More bodies join in. They move about silently, watching each other, nuzzling around the floor. In Wild Cat, Saïdo Lehlouh sheds light on one of HipHop’s foundational styles. The technical and aesthetic reappropriation by the French choreographer is reminiscent of the precise, supple, and delicate way cats move, between a maximum of attention and simultaneous relaxation. Wild Cat opens a space for individual expression and improvisation in which the usual organisational elements of time and space, as well as gravitation, appear to be suspended. On stage, Wild Cat unfolds with a visual and vibrant poetic of living dance, creating the encounter of dancers and audience in a moment of absolute presence.

During the mid-Nineties, the Paris b-boying scene astounded with their new vision of breaking. Wild Cat, Saïdo Lehlouh’s first choreography, was created in 2018, putting this style front and centre, a style defined by its fluidity and its cat-like finesse. Saïdo Lehlouh traces his roots to street dance, dancing with the Bad Trip Crew. Those experiences still inform his choreographic work that plays with introspection and submission to gravitation, inserting moments of explosive power.

As an audience, we are mainly served apparently “complete” products on stage. But what is the process towards a specific expression? Who is behind the artists, and what motivates them? As members of the audience, we easily forget the intensive journey and the long research process that are connected to an audience. The Artist Talks aim to produce transparency, opening a shared dialogue with the artists behind the pieces. We would really like to invite you to share your personal impressions.
