Big stage
Dates
15.08.2021

With Faustin Linyekula, Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, Panaibra Gabriel Canda, Venuri Perera and Zwoisy Mears-Clarke. Hosts: Ligia Lewis & Sarah Lewis-Cappellari

Choreographer and festival curator Ligia Lewis and cultural producer and doctoral candidate Sarah Lewis-Cappelari open up talks with the festival’s artists*. How do the festival’s overarching questions manifest in the individual works and artistic biographies of those participating in the talks? How do they position themselves within the contemporary dance scene with their works? What roles do the choreographic aspect, the acoustic part and imagery play in their works?

Sarah Lewis-Cappellari is a doctoral candidate in Performance Studies as well as a Eugene Cota-Robles stipendiary at the UCLA. By combining her artistic practice as both an educator and a performance artist, she creates projects that provide a stage for knowledge production and exchange. Her doctoral thesis is about the material and symbolic resonance of sugar, and she examines how this “sweet” commodity dictates taste while simultaneously spurring on the racialised imagination.

Ligia Lewis develops expressive concepts that lend shape to movements, language, affects, thoughts, relationships, expressions and to the bodies that carry them. Given cohesion by the logic of reciprocity, of chaos und play, she shapes space for that which emerges, and for the undetermined. In the and through the embodied practice, the body encounters aural and visual metaphors that materialise the enigmatic, the poetic and the dissonant factors in her work. Ligia Lewis was a tanzhaus nrw Factory Artist and won numerous awards, most recently the Tabori prize.
