Median & vibrance

Japanese all-round artist Hiraoki Umeda connects dance, visual arts and sound design in a way that keeps impressing. He pursues a personal fascination in his solo “Median”, one that has kept him intensely busy for many years now: If one magnifies human and non-human bodies in a large-scaled microscopic examination, differences between the creatures will become barely discernible. To Hiroaki Umeda, choreography, too, is not limited to the human body, it rather forms an encompassing net around all things that are in motion. Thus, he explores cellular choreography in “Median”, a choreography of molecular form and organic synthesis, giving visibility to that which eludes the naked eye.
The evening’s second part puts three female stars from the Japanese street dance scene front and centre. The dancers have won, among other awards, the renowned “Dance Delight Japan” show contest. Hiroki Umeda makes hip hop motion elements encounter impressive imagery. The dancers’ movements make the audience experience a physicalness that evokes changing images veering between human and machine.
