How do I change a car battery? How does a plumber’s helper turn into a veritable drainage wonder? What tricks and gimmicks do I have to keep in mind when tying my tie? Giuseppe Chico & Barbara Matijević trawled through countless YouTube amateur videos for their hit play “Forecasting” which opened its curtains more than sixty times throughout Europe as well as in China, Brazil and Singapore. The resulting Best Of from the research takes over the stage: Large as life and in fragments.
On stage, the videos coalesce with performer Barbara Matijević’s movements and turn into extensions of her body. Real and virtual space merge, become one and pose questions for the boundaries of the human body. Iva Nerina Sibila wrote in “tanz” magazine: “Bizarre, disorienting, sometimes even adorably funny effects arise when Chico and Matijević, in a manner most befitting science fiction, create quasi trans-human beings whose stories obliterate the boundaries between individual and collective.“
Croatian Barbara Matijević as well as Italian Giuseppe Chico, also collectively known as duo 1er Stratagème, have been working together since 2008 and conclude their trilogy „Theory of the performance to come or the only way to avoid the massacre is to become its authors“ with “Forecasting”. In their plays, the relation between body and technology as well as the creation of new narrative forms comes to the fore. Choreographer and dancer Barbara Matijević worked with Boris Charmatz and Jan Fabre, as well as with a number of others. Actor Giuseppe Chico was an ensemble member of French company Mille Plateaux Associés as well as doing work with Georges Appaix and Joris Lacoste. For “Forecasting”, they received the 2016 Jury Award at the 56th Sarajevo Theatre Festival MESS.
