Meins

“That’s mine! I’m stronger than you are! I’m bigger than you are! I’m faster than you are!” This competition does not only take place on the playgrounds, it also reflects in society. Düsseldorf choreographer Takao Baba developed his first childrens’ programme one year ago.  Four urban superheroes conquer the stage and compare their powers. Set in a futuristic boxing ring, they challenge each other. “I am ready!”, “May the force be with you!”, “Kamehameha!”: Heroes and anti-heroes, old and new alike, taken from SpongeBob, Star Wars or Dragon Ball, for example, serve as models for song lyrics and hip hop choreographies with which the four artists then compete. The sandbox makes you battle like you battle on the dancefloor. This also true for “Meins” (“Mine”). Yet, after a while, group dynamics come into play, and everyone, even the audience, starts working together, to create something bigger. Leading and following roles come up, sub-groups and dissidents. The whole becomes more than the sum of its parts.

Takao Baba sets out to find a language of one’s own with dancers Sefa Demirbas and Rymon Zacharei aka Rayboom as well as with singer Jenny Thiele. “Meins” (“Mine”) is back at the tanzhaus nrw following an invitation the Westwind Festival in 2017 and a tour of Belgium and Germany.
