Pale yellow sand, a cauldron of mountains on the horizon, above it a cold blue sky. The world presented in THE GHOST IN THE GLITCH is barren. Only the body on stage makes it move: Through live motion capture, five dancers with precise, multiplying movements feed a virtual landscape, populated by avatars that take up their movements, mirroring and continuing them.
Brig Huezo concludes a trilogy with THE GHOST IN THE GLITCH, a trilogy that asks for the relation between the body and digital technology. Following THE DEAD CODE MUST BE ALIVE! (2022) and THE DEATH AT THE CODE! (2024), the gaze is now directed towards bodies in a post-digital present – towards their work, their resilience and their persistence in a world in which physical and virtual realities are indelibly intertwined.
In a world in which humans have long since become fragmented archives of their own data, a hypnotic trip of mutating movements, virtual echoes and choreographic glitches unfolds. Movements loop, shift, multiply and reappear in new forms. Between synchronous formations, cyborg--like sequences and a fragile drawing of breath, a space is created wherein bodies, avatars and data spawn each other – and where every glitch turns into a moment of freedom: An insisting on that which eludes a complete coding, as urgent as it is playful.
With THE GHOST IN THE GLITCH, tanzhaus nrw continues its intense collaboration with Brig Huezo. As a post-digital choreographer, Huezo connects dance, motion tracking, gaming, and 3D design into idiosyncratic choreographic visual landscapes. For this groundbreaking artistic practice, Brig Huezo received the 2024 NRW Förderpreis für Darstellende Künste (North Rhine-Westphalian Support Award for the Performing Arts).
