In this lecture demonstration, Claire Cunningham provides insights into her unmistakable movement style “Quanimacy”. She shows how the use, reutilisation, the exploration of and disassociation with her crutches, as well as the conscious departure from dance techniques that were developed for non-disabled bodies, have influenced her artistic practice. She speaks about how her focus on the relation with her crutches and her body has shifted to the question how her crutches connect her to the world. She describes how her work has been marked by her life experience with disability and how this affects how society thinks about knowledge, values, connection, and interdependence.
Claire Cunningham lives in Glasgow, Scotland. She is a performer and develops multi-disciplinary stage works. As one of the most renowned artists with disability in the United Kingdom, her work often deals with crip and disability experiences, practices of care as well as with societal notions of knowledge and value. In 2021, Claire Cunningham received the German Dance Award for “Exceptional Artistic Development in Dance”. She has been the Einstein professor for “Choreography, Dance and Disability Arts” at the university-spanning Zentrum Tanz (HZT) in Berlin since October of 2023. Her solo “Songs of the Wayfarer” premiered in November 2024. The production earned a nomination in the dance category at the 2025 UK Theatre Awards and continues to tour internationally.

Admission Information & Assistance
Assistance Service
Information on how to get to tanzhaus nrw, including directions from the information point at Düsseldorf Central Station, can be found on the tanzhaus nrw website under “Your Visit”. The directions are available there as a PDF.
You are welcome to bring an assistance person free of charge or request an assistance person from the theatre. The service includes being accompanied from Düsseldorf Central Station to the venue, throughout the performance, and back to the station. If you would like to use this service, please let our ticketing staff know when purchasing your ticket or contact them by email at ticketservice@tanzhaus-nrw.de. From September 7th, you can also reach them by phone at 0211 17270-55, Monday to Friday, 10:30 am–2:30 pm.
The meeting point for the assistance service is at 3:30 pm at the information point at Düsseldorf Central Station, 30 minutes before the performance begins. This is also where the assistance person will accompany you back to after the performance.
Early Boarding
Early Boarding is an early admission option for anyone who needs a specific seat or additional time for a more relaxed entry, including people with visible or invisible disabilities and people with strollers. Seating is not assigned for this performance. Registration for Early Boarding is not required. Shortly before Early Boarding begins, an announcement will be made on-site.

Possible right up until the end of the performance.
Seating
Seating options include chairs without armrests, spaces for wheelchair users, floor cushions, and a limited number of beanbag seats. Beanbag seats and spaces for wheelchair users can be booked directly as the corresponding ticket category, either online or by phone.
Calm room
A calm room is available in Studio 1 at tanzhaus nrw. You can use it if you need a moment to yourself away from social interaction. The room has beanbags, cushions, and space to lie down. Please note that the room is not soundproof, so you may hear some noise from outside. Earplugs are available in the room if you need them.
