“Has it always been like this or is it like this to me now because I’m too old and my life falls in on me like a total crisis every day?,“ US-based choreographer Sarah Michelson asks in these turbulent times. Her stirring and witty dance theatre architecture plays are always one possible answer, even if she leaves them to the audience to spell out. Because her work is marked by a dialogue between form and history of dance, and it misleads her audience from the start. This is also true for her new production, which will celebrate its premiere at Kampnagel Hamburg in February 2018, where Sarah Michelson pours human actions in her newly invented spaces like single modules – layered or sequenced. Spoken word, props, dance and music connect to create a bizarre world rich in ideas, similar to the illogical logic found in dreams. With astounding clarity, she leaves it to us to dissolve the ambiguity. In Sarah Michelson’s works, the surroundings in which they take place achieve an importance on the same level as the possible danced expressions themselves, generated from the basis of the theatre, its structure and atmosphere.
Sarah Michelson, multiple “Bessie Award“ winner, presented at the most important theatre venues in the US as well as in museums. She was one of two choreographers participating in the Whitney Biannual 2012 where she received the acclaimed “Bucksbaum Award” for “Devotion Study #1 – The American Dancer”. Apart from her artistic work, she also co-curates Movement Research and The Kitchen as one of New York’s most important voices within the dance scene.
“Sarah Michelson is an artist you can trust, even without fully grasping what she is up to. Her work can be gripping even if it makes you uncomfortable – a risk she is willing to take.” Village Voice
