Ten selected films deal with the representation of cyborgs – cybernetic organisms – on screen: The hero in an action blockbuster (“RoboCop”), the outsider in a love story (“I’m A Cyborg But That’s OK”), the pianist with transplant murder hands in a science fiction or horror setting (“Orlac’s Hands”) and further cyborg characters point to the complexities that occur along with technical, mechanical and medical body enhancements. These topics also resonate with the question for dangers to and gains for humans; illusory control of the human body itself and over the cyborgs is an issue broached, with cyborgs that seem torn between human emotionality and machine-like efficiency at times.
