Ultramarine Sway
Dance performance for all from 14 years.
Something lurks in the ocean’s depths. At least, that is what some fear. Something endangers human existence form there, maybe the Kraken or some other ancient creature. The octopus is not among the most popular animals: In film, literature, and in mythological stories from various regions of the world, octopi resurface as threats – as nefarious, slimy, demonic monsters and ship smashers, while science marvels about their capacities, idiosyncrasies, and intelligence. The fascination for the world of the octopus serves as this dance performance’s inspiration.
New catastrophes occur daily, wreckage of our world is floating around us. We try to reorder ourselves. Yet this time, an octopus takes over the reins. Built from engine parts, cables, batteries, Arduino suits, and human bodies, the dance piece Ultramarine Sway becomes a living monument for octopods which challenge our human notion of what a resourceful and creative body ought to be. Just like the octopi who always try to be someplace else rather than at the point where they are expected, we collectively experience moments of boundlessness and transitory transformations as we give space to movement and empathy far beyond the human body. Are we able to change the way in which we perceive this creature? Will we be able to look at it from another angle, shed our fear of new ways and alter them into curiosity and a lust for the unknown?
