What do we think when we think about dance? What if we could read the brain waves of a dancer? In “The Choreography of Things” Choy Ka Fai, media artist and former fellow of the Berlin house of artists Bethany, researches neurological narrative structures of our bodies and the parameters we are conditioned by. In different experimental set-ups he reaches the complex network of relationships of body, nervous system and brain and, working with four dancers, creates a fascinating frame of performative elements and visualization of neurological structures. In autumn 2005 he already showed parts of a multi-media archive of dance in Asia. Now he presents the installation “Introspective” and “Cortex”, a work-in-progress.
“Introspective” is a sort of exhibition where the dancers –equipped with sensors – provide insight into their consciousness, emotions and thoughts emerging during the choreographic process. Choy Ka Fai searches for visualisations of often unexplained and unexplainable processes of how dance emerges and is perceived.
